The best two weeks of the yearTwenty-pound-plus Chinook are stacked off the Salmon River and Oswego in 60–120 feet, and the first push is already in the lower river. Trolling in the morning, drift boat in the afternoon.

The lake fishes completely differently from one end to the other. The west end is a spring brown trout fishery; the east end is salmon, smallmouth and ice. Start where the fish you want live.
Niagara Bar & Lewiston
Niagara CountyThe one place on this lake that fishes hard in February. The Lower Niagara does not freeze and it does not quit.

Niagara CountyFifteen minutes from the dock to the first rod down. Wilson Harbor sits at the mouth of Twelvemile Creek behind a protected breakwall, and the bottom drops away fast enough that you are fishing almost as soon as you clear the channel.

Niagara CountyWestern New York plans its April around this harbour. Eighteenmile Creek empties into a cold lake at Olcott every spring, dragging a plume of warm, stained water out across the shallows.

Orleans CountyA trolling port in spring and a wading river in autumn. Oak Orchard Creek is one of the most productive tributaries on the American shoreline, and Point Breeze sits right on its mouth.

Monroe CountyThree different fisheries inside twenty minutes of downtown. Rochester is the only place on this shoreline where you can leave a city hotel, be on the water in fifteen minutes, and be over three hundred feet of salmon water not long after.

Wayne CountyKings in the morning, bass in the bay after lunch. Sodus Bay is a big, protected, almost resort-like body of water with a narrow inlet out to the main lake.

Cayuga CountyThe August port nobody talks about. Little Sodus Bay is a deep, sheltered notch in the shoreline with an unusually short run out to the mid-lake temperature break.

Oswego CountyWhere the biggest fish of the year get caught. Oswego is a working harbour at the mouth of a real river, with deep water close by and the largest concentration of serious charter operations on the eastern end of the lake.

Oswego CountyThe most famous salmon run in the eastern United States. The Salmon River is why a great many people know this lake exists at all.

Jefferson CountyThe port to book if you want to catch a lot of fish. The eastern end of the lake breaks into islands, shoals, points and weed edges, and Henderson Harbor sits in the middle of it.

Jefferson CountyWhere the lake becomes the St. Lawrence River. At the far eastern end the shoreline turns, the islands multiply and the lake begins to funnel into the St.
