Niagara Bar & Lewiston fishing charters
The one place on this lake that fishes hard in February. The Lower Niagara does not freeze and it does not quit. Four hundred thousand cubic feet of cold, oxygenated water push through the gorge every second, and that current holds fish through weather that shuts the rest of the lake down completely.
The water
What Niagara is good for
There are two distinct fisheries here and most visitors only ever hear about one. Upstream, from Devil's Hole down to the Niagara Bar, drift boats work the deep green slots for steelhead, lake trout, brown trout and some of the largest smallmouth in the Great Lakes. It is a current fishery — egg sacs and beads under floats, or three-way rigs bouncing plugs along the bottom in thirty to sixty feet of moving water.
Downstream, where the river spills into the lake, the Niagara Bar is a broad shallow shelf that concentrates baitfish and everything that eats them. Spring browns and lake trout sit on it in fifteen to forty feet; by May the first kings show on the temperature break outside it. The Bar is big-boat water and it can turn ugly in a west wind, which is exactly why you want a captain who runs it every week.
The gorge also gives you genuine shore access, which is rare on this lake. The Devil's Hole stairs, Artpark and the Lewiston public docks all put a wading angler on real fish without a boat. It is a hard walk down and a harder walk back up.

Drift boat, in the gorge
Float fishing egg sacs and beads through the deep slots, or back-trolling plugs. Steelhead and lake trout all winter, smallmouth from June.
Trolling the Bar
Stickbaits and spoons on boards and riggers in 15–40 FOW for browns and lakers, moving out to 80–150 FOW as kings arrive in May.
Shore and wade
Devil's Hole, Artpark and the Lewiston docks. Jigs under floats, egg sacs, and spoons off the wall.

Can you really fish here in January?
Yes, and it is one of the reasons captains here run year-round. The river stays open and holds steelhead, lake trout and browns through the winter. Dress for it — it is a cold, wet, standing-in-a-boat kind of day, and it is worth it.
Do I need a boat to fish the Lower Niagara?
No. The gorge has some of the only genuinely productive shore access on the lake, at Devil's Hole, Artpark and the Lewiston docks. A guided wade or float trip will still put you on far more fish.
What is the difference between the river and the Bar?
The river is a current fishery fished from drift boats for steelhead, lakers and smallmouth. The Bar is open lake — trolling from a bigger boat for browns, lake trout and kings. Many captains fish both and pick based on wind.
