Lake America fishing report

The lake

Staging kings are holding around 90 feet, with boats working anywhere from 60 feet out past 200. The northeast wind on Sunday pushed colder water in and scattered fish that had been concentrated, so the boats covering the most water are the ones catching. As nights cool, fish are moving steadily closer to the river mouths.

Divers on a number three setting are producing at 80 to 130 feet back on average, with some crews running out to 180. Sliders on the riggers set around 30 feet down are picking up the higher fish. Flasher-and-fly combinations and meat rigs are doing the heavy lifting; UV and Carbon-14 spoons, NK Frostbites and glow J-plugs are all in the program. White blades early, chrome once the sun is up.

The Salmon River

A cancelled whitewater release left levels lower than expected, which has spread fish through the whole system rather than stacking them in the usual holes. That is not bad news if you are willing to walk — it means less competition for each pool, but you have to go find them.

Fish the fastest water and the transitions. Fresh, brightly coloured baits early in the day, then drop to lighter baits and natural colours as the light comes up and the fish get looked at.

Check the release schedule before you commit to a stretch. It changes the river completely, and it is the single biggest reason a local guide outfishes a visitor with identical tackle.

The Oswego River

Levels were raised for a week and it pulled salmon and brown trout in. Early-run fish are going straight to the dam. The fast-water shoots are the most productive water, and deep-diving crankbaits fished off the high and low walls are taking fish. Night fishing behind the YMCA has been producing.

Regulations to know

The brown trout limit is one fish, within a three-fish combination limit that allows only one brown and one steelhead. Check the current NYSDEC regulations before you launch — the tributary rules differ from the open lake and they change.
