Olcott fishing charters
Western New York plans its April around this harbour. Eighteenmile Creek empties into a cold lake at Olcott every spring, dragging a plume of warm, stained water out across the shallows. Brown trout stack on the edge of that plume so predictably that the fleet has been fishing it the same way for decades.

What Olcott is good for
The Olcott brown trout fishery is one of the most reliable spring bites in the Great Lakes. From the first week of April into June, fish sit in eight to twenty-five feet of water — sometimes less — and they are caught on light line, small baits and boards run a long way off the boat. Fifteen-pound browns are a genuine possibility and the average fish is nothing to apologise for.
Summer moves the fleet offshore for kings and coho on the thermocline, and the harbour runs at a much quieter pace. Then in September the whole thing reverses: salmon push up Eighteenmile Creek, and the water below Burt Dam becomes one of the busiest shore fisheries in the state. Steelhead follow them in and hold through the winter into April.
That gives Olcott an unusual shape — a boat town in spring and summer, a wading town in autumn and winter, with two completely different sets of customers arriving at each end of the year.

Fall salmon and winter steelhead below the dam on Eighteenmile Creek — float fishing egg sacs, beads and jigs from shore.
