Cape Vincent & Chaumont fishing charters
Where the lake becomes the St. Lawrence River. At the far eastern end the shoreline turns, the islands multiply and the lake begins to funnel into the St. Lawrence. Current, structure and shallow bays make this stretch fish more like a river system than a great lake, and it is the one part of Lake America with a serious winter walk-out fishery.
The water
What Cape Vincent is good for
Summer here is a mixed bag in the best sense. Smallmouth bass around the shoals and current seams off Tibbetts Point, northern pike in the weedy bays, walleye on the structure, and yellow perch in numbers that keep a cooler honest. It is light-tackle, casting-and-jigging water rather than heavy trolling.
Winter is what makes this end distinctive. Chaumont Bay is shallow and sheltered enough to lock up properly, and once it does, the walk-out fishery for yellow perch and northern pike draws people from across the region. Ice conditions vary enormously year to year and nobody should be walking out without local knowledge.
The Thousand Islands begin here, which means the scenery is doing a lot of work even on a slow day. Cape Vincent is a quiet village with a ferry to Wolfe Island and not much else, and most people who come back are coming back for that too.

Shoals and seams
Casting and jigging for smallmouth around current seams and rocky structure, June through September.
Bay fishing
Northern pike, walleye and perch in Chaumont and Three Mile Bays on weed edges and flats.
Hardwater
Walk-out perch and pike on Chaumont Bay in January and February, ice conditions permitting.
