The one thing to know

October fills a year out

If you want to fish the Salmon River run, book your bed before you book your captain. Pulaski has a finite number of rooms and the whole world wants them for the same three weeks. Prices climb steeply and minimum-night stays are normal. Anglers who leave lodging until last end up driving forty minutes each way from Syracuse.

What to ask before you book

A fishing trip asks things of a room that a normal holiday doesn't. Nine questions that save a miserable morning.

Trailer parking

Will a truck and a 21-foot boat actually fit, and is the lot lit? Plenty of places say yes and mean a compact car.

Can you leave at 4am?

Some places gate the lot or lock the lobby overnight. You want to be on the water before first light, not waiting for someone to find a key.

Late check-in

A good day runs long. Ask what happens if you roll in at 10pm.

Fish cleaning and freezer space

A cleaning station is ideal; a hose and somewhere to put a cooler of fillets is the minimum. Ask before you fill a cooler.

Breakfast before 5am — or a fridge

Almost nowhere serves breakfast that early. A fridge and microwave in the room is worth more than a continental buffet you'll never see.

Minimum-night stays

Many Pulaski places require two or three nights through October. Budget for it.

Launch or river?

They are not the same place. If you're trolling, you want to be near the harbour. If you're fishing the Salmon River, you want to be near the water you're fishing — Altmar and Pulaski are twenty minutes apart and it matters at dawn.

Cancellation terms

The lake blows out. Ask what happens if you can't fish, before you pay a deposit.
